Nourishing Your Best Friend: A Nutrient-Packed Bone Broth Recipe for Dogs

Our dogs are more than just pets; they're cherished members of our families. And just like any family member, we want to ensure they're well-nourished and healthy. One way to do that is by preparing a nutritious and delicious bone broth for our canine companions. In this article, we'll share an informative and dog-loving recipe for homemade bone broth that's sure to make your furry friend's tail wag with delight!

Why Bone Broth for Dogs?

Before we dive into the recipe, let's talk about why bone broth is a fantastic addition to your dog's diet:

1. Joint Health: Bone broth is rich in glucosamine and chondroitin, which support healthy joints, making it especially beneficial for older dogs or those prone to joint issues.

2. Digestive Health: It's gentle on the stomach and can help soothe digestive troubles. The gelatin in bone broth promotes good gut health, aiding in digestion. A great post fast meal for GI affected dogs.

3. Hydration: Dogs may not always drink enough water, but they're more likely to lap up a flavorful broth, helping to keep them well-hydrated.

4. Immune Boost: The nutrients in bone broth, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, can boost your pup's immune system.

The Recipe: Homemade Bone Broth for Dogs

*Ingredients:*

- 2-3 pounds of bones (chicken, lamb, beef, or turkey)
- 4 quarts of water (about 16 cups) or enough water to cover in ur pot or slow cooker.
- 1-2 carrots, broken in half (we will strain them out later so no need to make it pretty)
- 1-2 celery stalks, broken in chunks (I have also thrown in nutrient rich mushrooms, spinach etc. your texture won’t be as jelly like when cooled but will be mega packed full of sooooo much good! Just no onions please)
- 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (for nutrient extraction)
- A pinch of sea salt (optional)
- Fresh parsley (for added vitamins)

*Instructions:*

1. Select Your Bones: Choose high-quality, raw bones from your local butcher or grocery store. Beef knuckle bones, lamb leg or ribs, chicken feet, or turkey necks work well. I usually buy big bags of different bones from my butcher and throw them in the freezer until I need them.

2. Prep Your Veggies: Wash and break up your veggies. These veggies add flavor and nutrition to the broth.

3. Boil the Bones: Place the bones in a large stockpot or slow cooker. Add the water and apple cider vinegar. The vinegar helps extract the nutrients from the bones. Let it sit for about 20-30 minutes.

4. Bring to a Simmer: Slowly bring the pot to a gentle simmer over low heat. Skim off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface. This helps clarify the broth.

5. Add Veggies and Simmer: After skimming, add the chopped vegetables and a pinch of salt (if desired). Let the broth simmer for at least 24 hours, the longer is better. This extended simmering extracts maximum nutrients.

6. Cool and Strain: Turn off the heat and allow the broth to cool. Once it's safe to handle, strain it to remove bones and vegetable pieces.

7. Serve to Your Pup: Pour the bone broth into a dog-friendly bowl. Garnish with fresh parsley for an extra vitamin boost. Let your furry friend enjoy the nourishing goodness!

*Storage:* Refrigerate or freeze them in little silicone moulds for a yummy frozen treat.

With this nutritious and dog-loving bone broth recipe, you're not only providing your pup with a delicious treat but also promoting their overall well-being. Your dog's health and happiness are worth every lovingly prepared batch! 🐾
